Govt pulls internet providers over Kashmir security fears

SRINAGAR, May 7:  Authorities have pulled internet service providers, especially operating in Kashmir, over security issues due to the inability to trace calls through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

Internet service providers were called to the Union Home Ministry recently to deliberate upon issues of interception and to find the end user of the VoIP based on the Internet Protocol address, sources said.

The authorities have complained that the VoIP was becoming a security issue as the origin of caller and time of call cannot be ascertained, prompting fears of misuse by militants in the Valley.

Sources said security agencies were worried about the lack of real time monitoring of communication exchanges taking place over the internet and that telecom operators were not providing them the real time data of these conversations which is a security risk.

The internet providers have been asked to come up with a solution in a month’s time, they said.
