Curfew Continues in Shopian After CRPF Killings

SRINAGAR: Curfew has been lifted from all towns of south Kashmir except Shopian, where it is force for the third day following the killing of a youth by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), police said.

Five people have been shot dead in the district’s Gagren village since last Saturday.

Yesterday, residents defied curfew and staged a demonstration in the village. They were demanding that the CRPF camp there – accused of all the killings – be removed.

Soon police and paramilitaries lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse them.

The government has ordered that the CRPF personnel there be replaced by the state policemen.

However many have insisted that the camp be dismantled.

Meanwhile a shutdown is being observed across the valley against the violence in Shopian.

Senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a two-day shutdown till Sunday.

“This will convey a message to end the forced occupation in Kashmir,” he said.

“This will also convey to the world that our struggle will last as long as the last Indian soldier lasts here.”
