Daytime Curfew Lifted in Kishtwar, Peace March Held

Night curfew to continue

KISHTWAR: Curfew has been lifted in Kishtwar area of Jammu and Kashmir, 13 days after clashes between Hindus and Muslims killed three and wounded scores others.

A ‘peace march’ was also held in the area.

However the government has said that the night curfew will continue.

An official spokesman said that a senior Minister, Taj Mohiuddin convened a joint meeting of leaders of both the communities.

Taj headed an all party delegation of political leaders that reached the area on Monday.

The delegation held hectic deliberations for two days with members and leaders of each community to restore peace and harmony in the town.

“The peace meeting was held in a very cordial manner with both sides stressing for restoring peace and harmony in the district. All the issues raised by the leaders of two communities pertaining to compensation, lifting of curfew, check on anti social elements etc. were resolved amicably,” he said.

However, the representatives of BJP left the delegation midway while as the representative of Panthers Party had left the delegation last night.

The meeting was followed by a peace march held in the town which was attended by members of both the communities including traders, intellectuals, political and social workers and students.

The peace march passed through main markets of the township easing the tense situation prevailing in the town.

Addressing the people, Taj expressed happiness over the breakthrough and hoped that this “feeling of brotherhood would prove long lasting”.

“As per the wishes of the representatives of both the communities,” the spokesman added, “the Minister announced lifting of daytime curfew in the area.”

However the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, Shantamanu told a local news agency, KNS, that “night curfew will continue to ensure that there are no law and order disturbances again.”
