On Eid Eve, Kashmiri Separatists Placed Under House Arrest

There won’t be restrictions on Eid in any part of Kashmir: Div Com

SRINAGAR: In view of apprehensions about anti-India protests on Eid-ul-Fitr, authorities in Kashmir have placed several separatist leaders under house arrest.

The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Shalinder Kumar told a local news agency KNS that there won’t be any kind of restrictions.

However, he said, “in case need arises appropriate steps will be taken to maintain peace in the city.”

Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for peaceful protests after Eid prayers against the human rights violations in the state.

He asked people to protest against the execution of Afzal Guru in Delhi’s Tihar jail on Feb 9 besides other killings in the valley by security forces.

The news agency reports, quoting sources, that strict instructions have been given to the police to intensify vigil around the Hyderpora residence of Geelani and not to allow him to move out.

Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah and National Front Chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan have also been placed under house arrest ahead.

The spokesmen of both the parties have condemned the house arrest of their leaders.

Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq will offer Eid prayers at historic Eidgah in Srinagar. The Eid prayers would be held at 10 am and before that from 9 am onwards Mirwaz will deliver Eid sermon.

Whether the authorities would allow him out of his home is yet to be seen.
