Corrupt Engineer Gets 4 Years Jail in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A special anti-corruption court in Kashmir has awarded four years rigorous imprisonment to a Junior Engineer in an 11-year-old graft case, official sources said.

Additional special Judge Anti-corruption, Kashmir, Jeema Bashir held Mushtaq Ahmad Wani guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a contractor in Bandipora district in 2002 and pronounced the verdict on him, a spokesman of Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) said.

The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the convict, he said.

Wani, a resident of Chatti village of the district, was caught red handed while demanding and accepting the bribe when he was posted as Junior Engineer in Block Development Office in Bandipora in 2002, the spokesman said.

He said the official, who was immediately placed under suspension, had demanded the bribe from a contractor Mohammad Yousaf Khawaza on June 15, 2002 for processing his bill regarding execution of civil works at Onagam village of Bandipora.

The Court directed for sending Wani to Central Jail in Srinagar for undergoing the sentence imposed on him, the spokesman added.
