SRINAGAR: A middle-aged man committed suicide after failing to return the money he had collected from people over assurances that he would get them government jobs.
Police said Jankar, 45, took poison at his residence in village Bakore of Khour area in Jammu.
They said that the deceased had an altercation with some people over money matters.
“He had received money from at least five local people assuring them jobs in Police Department but when he failed to keep his promise, the locals yesterday approached him and demanded back their hard-earned money,” officials told the United News of India.
Jankar’s family members and relatives later staged a protest alleging that he was threatened by some persons, which forced him to take an extreme step.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters. “We have registered a case and started the investigations while some persons have also been detained for questioning,” a senior police official told the agency.
In a separate incident in Chrar Shareef area of Kashmir’s Budgam district, Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, 50, committed suicide by taking poison.
Why Sheikh took his life is not immediately clear. But residents of the area told Freepress that Sheikh may have suffered losses in his fruit business.
