SRINAGAR: The Ladakh region remains cut off from the rest of Jammu and Kashmir for the second day today due to landslides, triggered by snowfall between Sonamarg-Zojila and Meenmarg.
A Met department spokesman said moderate to heavy snowfall is likely from Zojila to Drass, the second coldest inhabited place in the world, during the next 24 hours.
A traffic police spokesman said for precautionary measures the highway linking the Ladakh region with the rest of the state was closed for any traffic movement.
Traffic movement on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was suspended on Sunday morning following fresh snowfall at Sonmarg, Zojila pass and Drass, a traffic police official said.
There were landslides at several places on the highway, he said adding that no vehicles were allowed from Srinagar or Drass. However, traffic from Leh to Drass was plying normally.
The official said Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway again. However, he said, no vehicle will be allowed till a green signal is received from the BRO and traffic police officials deployed on the highway.
The highway was reopened only on April 6 after remaining closed since December last year due to snowfall.
