Rain, Snow Likely in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Snow is likely to occur in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir while the plains would experience light rain or thundershowers, weather officials say.

In the valley, where a cloudy sky was witnessed in the capital Srinagar, the ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest with minus 2.5 degrees.

A Met department spokesman told the United News of India that light rain or thundershowers would occur at a few places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. However, the higher reaches will experience snow, he added.

There would be no large change in the weather during subsequent two days.

At Pahalgam, base camp of Holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalyas, the minimum temperature was 2.7 degrees, two notches above normal.

However, at Gulmarg, the minimum temperature was minus 2.5 degree, 1.5 degrees below normal.

At Leh it was minus 0.8 degree while at Kargil, a border town in Ladakh region, the minimum temperature was 0.2 degrees, he said. The Met spokesman said there could be light rain or snow also in Leh tomorrow.
