SRINAGAR: Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest Thursday, following his arrival in Kashmir from New Delhi.
Authorities had earlier prevented the octogenarian leader from flying home after Afzal Guru was hanged on Feb 9.
He spent nearly 18 days under house arrest in Delhi and strict restrictions were also imposed on his communication.
Witnesses say the police waited at the Srinagar airport for Geelani to arrive and then took him away to his residence in Hyderpora. Police and paramilitaries have now been deployed outside his house.
Our correspondent says the police fired tear smoke shells to disperse angry protesters who pelted them with stones after Geelani arrived at his residence.
Clashes have now erupted at nearby Galwanpora area, he says.
