Militants Strike in North Kashmir, Kill 2 Cops: Police

SRINAGAR: Two cops have been killed in firing by suspected militants in Kashmir valley’s northern town of Handwara on Saturday morning, police say.

Two constables Azad Singh and Santosh Singh of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) were on market duty when gunmen struck at around 11oo hrs.

“They were in a park near the market when militants fired upon them from point blank range. Currently they were posted at police station Handwara,” a police official informed.

The officer said the policemen received bullets in their heads.

Santosh Singh was a resident of Kathua and Azad Chand hailed from Udhampur, he said.

A local news agency KNS says that a spokesman of Hizbul Mujahideen militant group identifying himself as Baleeguddin said the attack was carried out by one of its teams. He claimed that 3 security personnel were killed in the attack.

In another statement, Jamiat ul Mujahideen spokesman Jameel Ahmad said the attack was carried out by militants of their outfit, the Greater Kashmir reports.
