Omar Supports Demand For Bringing Back Guru’s Body

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday supported the demand of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s family for his body.

The state government has forwarded a representation from Guru’s family to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) seeking return of the terrorist’s body, which was buried inside Delhi’s Tihar Central Jail after he was hanged on Saturday.

“We have received representation. I received a copy of the representation that was addressed to the DC (Deputy Commissioner) of Baramulla.

I have asked for that representation to be forwarded to the Government of India. It’s part of an ongoing discussion with them. Beyond that, I don’t want to say anything,” Abdullah has said.

There is a growing demand in Kashmir for Afzal Guru’s body to be returned for burial in the valley.

Separatists have reserved an empty grave in the “Martyr’s Graveyard” in Srinagar in his name, beside that of Maqbool Bhat – the founder of the JKLF who was hanged and buried in Tihar jail in 1984.

Will the Home Ministry concede to the state government’s request is yet to be seen.
