Kashmir Highway through, stranded vehicles cleared

SRINAGAR: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Kashmir’s main link with rest of the country, has been thrown open for traffic after it was closed following heavy snowfall late on Thursday.

But officials say only those vehicles which were stranded on the route were allowed to move.

“Vehicles were stranded at points like Ramban, Udhampur, Batote, Banihal and Jawahar Tunnel, the entrance into Kashmir valley,” a traffic spokesman said.

However on Sunday, he added, traffic including private, commercial and passenger vehicles will be allowed to ply towards the valley from winter capital Jammu, where around 300 passengers have been stranded since the blockade.

On Monday, Jan 21 traffic from Srinagar will be allowed to move towards Jammu, the spokesperson added.
