Kashmir girl says police shielding her kidnappers

SRINAGAR, Dec 2: A girl has accused the Kashmir police of conniving with her kidnappers who she says also harassed her sexually.

A Judge will now investigate into these allegations.

Crime against women is increasing in Muslim-majority Kashmir which has seen violence for more than two decades since a rebellion against New Delhi started in the late eighties.

But the conflict, which saw tens of thousands of people die, is gradually waning and militants’ hold over daily life has eased.

The girl, a resident of central Kashmir’s Chrari Shareef area told a district and sessions judge that one of the kidnappers was a colleague and was forcing her into an illicit relationship, a local agency KNS reported.

“On November 10 at around 6:30 PM he, alongwith some goons tried to kidnap me from a marriage party. However, some people rescued me and afterthat I approached the police station Chrari-Sharief for registering a First Information Report,” she states in a petition to the court.

“But the police refused to file the FIR.”

Although the police registered later her complaint after directions from the court, she says they did not record her statement.

“On the contrary the Station House Officer registered a case against her brother and other relatives,” she said.

She also says that the police forced her to write a false statement and also threatened her not to disclose the details of the incident, after the court had directed the SHO to appear in person to defend the charges.

“Outside the court, I (the applicant) was bundled into a gypsy and was taken to P/S Chadoora where I was forced to write a statement against my wishes at gun point and was also threatened not to disclose the incident to any person,” her petition reads.

The district and sessions judge has directed the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Budgam to hold an inquiry into the entire incident and also the allegations against the police officer.
