SRINAGAR, Sept 10: Notwithstanding chief minister Omar Abdullah’s emphasis on following road rules after traffic lights were installed in capital Srinagar, a cop was beaten up by guards of a senior cabinet minister for stopping them from jumping a red signal, witnesses say.
They said Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE) and senior Congress leader Taj Mohi-ud-Din was heading towards his government residence at Gupkar when his cavalcade was signalled to stopped by a traffic officer on duty as the signal was red.
“As soon as they reached the crossing at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), they crossed the signal even though it was red and many other vehicles were waiting,” a pedestrian said.
“One of the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic police officer stopped them but the security guards came out and hit him with rifles and roughed him up,” he said.
The officer, sub-inspector Mohan Lal, has been shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Earlier this year, chief minister Omar Abdullah won appreciation of the media and ordinary people after he ordered his motorcade to stop at a red signal.
Meanwhile news agencies have reported that the two security guards – constables Mohammad Shafi and Mohammad Abbas – who were involved in the assault have been arrested on charges of attempt to murder.
