SRINAGAR, Aug 9: An army soldier has been killed in a gunfight at the Line of Control which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, a defence spokesperson said, the third such incident in the past five days.
Lt. Colonel J.S. Brar said that the soldier died after the army enaged with a group of infiltrators trying to cross into this side of the territory.
“Alert troops on the LoC near the RC Post in Gurez sector detected some suspicious movement during the night. When the troops challenged the infiltrators, they started firing in which a rifleman was killed. The infiltrators were forced to withdraw,” Brar was quoted as saying by wire agency IANS.
The spokesperson said that the casualties among the infiltrators could not be confirmed.
This is the third time in four days that excahnge of fire has taken place at the Line of Control. At least two soldiers of the Border Security Force were injured two days ago when Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire.
India and Pakistan had agreed for ceasefire on frontiers in November 2003, considered amongst the pivotal confidence building measures between the two countries which have thrice gone for war over Kashmir.
