Soldiers lock up Army officers in J&K

SRINAGAR, Aug 9: A group of Army soldiers reportedly locked up their officers in a mess after their colleague committed suicide in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. The stand-off happened in 16 Light Cavalry, the oldest armoured regiment.

On Wednesday morning, a soldier Arun V, from Thiruvananthapuram, shot himself with his service rifle in the camp. His fellow soldiers say he was upset after his officer denied him home leave.

“Angry jawans then ganged up to surround the officers and their residences in protest, leading to a prolonged face-off,” sources were quoted as saying by various news organisations.

According to a media report, the Army has denied the incident but has ordered a court of inquiry to ascertain the reason behind the suicide.

This is the second major breach of discipline in the Army in the recent times.

Earlier this year officers of an artillery unit deployed at the Nyoma district of Eastern Ladakh were beaten up by soldiers. This left the unit commanding officer, two majors and two jawans grievously injured and almost tuned into a mutiny.
