March towards Kashmir’s gutted shrine foiled

SRINAGAR, July 31: Dozens of religious activists and Islamic scholars have been detained as police foiled an attempt to take out a march to the gutted shrine of Dastgeer Sahib at Khanyar in downtown city in Jammu and Kashmir.

Moulana Haqqani and his supporters were detained by police outside Sher-e-Kashmir park near Polo view as they tried to march to pay homage to the Dastigeer Sahib shrine which was gutted in a mysterious fire on June 25, official sources said.

The shrine was destroyed in a mysterious fire on June 25, but the relics were retrieved.

Tuesday’s march was called by Mutahida Ulemai Ahli-Sunnat (MUAS), a religious conglomeration, to observe the 11th day of fasting month of Ramazan. The followers of Hazrat Shekh Abdul Qadir Jeelani, after whom the shrine was named, consider 11th day of every lunar month as sacred.

Another leader of the conglomeration Ghulam Rasool Hami was put under house arrest, a spokesman of the MUAS said.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC are in place in the area, which bars assembly of more than five persons.
