KUPWARA: This village in Kupwara district of north Kashmir has been reeling under darkness for nearly a month now.
Local residents in Dawood Colony, Muqam-e-Shahewali, say the authorities are showing no interest in getting the damaged community transformer repaired.
“We are facing immense hardships in absence of electricity. Our children are suffering badly. We are unable to charge our mobile phones while appliances like refrigerators and iron are lying defunct,” said Showkat Ahmad Hajam, a local resident.
He said the villagers even brought the matter to the notice of a minister, but in vain.
The residents have warned of protests if things were not set right without delay.
Chief Engineer of the Power Development Department, Bashir Ahmad Khan expressed his surprise over the long delay in repairing the damaged transformer.
“I will look into the matter. It is shocking that even after a month the transformer has not been repaired,” he said.
