2010 Crackdown: JKLF Files PIL Against Army

SRINAGAR: After former Army chief Gen V K Singh said an intelligence unit of Army had been working overtime in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has filed another PIL in the High Court seeking direction to the police to register an FIR against Army in the 2010 crackdown in the valley.

The PIL, which was accepted by the court today, alleged that there is a reason to believe that the whole operation was orchestrated by the Indian Army in the Valley during 2010. Therefore, it demanded a probe into the role of Army.

“We have filed a PIL which has been accepted by the court today,” Front chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik said, adding that they filed the petition following the recent admission by former Army chief Gen V K Singh that an intelligence unit of the Army had been working overtime in the Kashmir.

The revelations by Gen Singh were enough to reach to the conclusion that the unarmed youths were killed in cold blood for other purpose, Mr Malik alleged.

Malik said the crackdown started on April 30, 2010 when Army killed two youths at Machil after declaring them foreign infiltrators. As the people agitated against these killings on the border, there was spate of killings which continued throughout 2010, resulting in the death of 117 people.

The fresh PIL alleged that the whole operation was orchestrated by the Indian Army.

It also alleged that massacre of people, coupled with damage of private properties, was outcome of deep routed conspiracy in which the state funds were used, official positions abused and many people in civil administration and police, including journalists, were misused.

The discernible object appears to be to perpetuate killing of innocent people, continue the conflict and cover up fake encounters by Army like that of Machiland Pathribal, the PIL alleged.

The further discernible object appears to be to justify continuation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) revocation of which is otherwise opposed by the Army, it added.
